Liguria Area Guide

Situated in north west Italy, it encompasses a 330km length of the Italian coastline, as well as impressive mountain scenery inland. From La Spezia on the borders of Tuscany, past the region’s capital Genoa, and around to Ventimiglia on the border with France, the sea is one of the main draws for visitors to Liguria. The Ligurian Riviera, also known as the Italian Riviera, is the narrow coastal strip which lies between the Ligurian Sea and the mountain chain formed by the Maritime Alps and the Apennines. The beautiful UNESCO-listed Cinque Terre national park is a beautiful, unspoilt stretch of coastline in the southernmost point of the region, while further north you pass through such revered resorts as Portofino, Santa Margherite Ligure and Rapallo.

The capital, Genoa, is a multi-faceted city that combines the ancient with the modern, the past with the present. This city belongs to the sea and the sea belongs to it; its culture, places, food and buildings tell the story of the old Maritime Republic. Further to the west lies the famous port city of Sanremo, that has become synonymous with the Italian music scene, courtesy of the Sanremo Music Festival, held here since 1951.
